Suitability guidance

What can be sent by mail or courier?

The mail-in service is for safe, stable, legally shippable items. If in doubt, contact us first — an attended appointment may be a better route.

Suitable for mail-in inspection

  • PCBs and PCB assemblies
  • Electronic components
  • Small electronic products
  • Power supplies and control modules
  • Prototype assemblies
  • Safe returned goods
  • Warranty claim items
  • Small mechanical parts
  • Additive-manufactured parts
  • Safe legal or insurance evidence items
  • Research samples
  • Ceramics and small artefacts

Not suitable for posting

  • Dangerous, unstable or unknown hazardous items
  • Damaged, swollen, leaking, smoking or overheating lithium batteries
  • Items emitting fumes, heat, liquid or odour
  • Pressurised containers
  • Hazardous chemicals
  • Biological or radiological hazards
  • Ammunition, pyrotechnics or energetic materials
  • Items prohibited by postal or courier regulations
  • Any item that cannot be lawfully or safely transported

If an item may be unsafe to transport, do not post it.

Contact SMSC first to discuss whether an attended appointment, specialist handling route or alternative advice is appropriate. For immediate concerns, follow appropriate emergency or organisational procedures.
